Abstract:

Objective

To evaluate the effect of periodontal treatment (scaling and root planning, SRP) on elimination of halitosis and reduction of the level of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) for patients with periodontitis.

Methods

40 patients (19 males, 21 female cases) with periodontitis were selected according to organoleptic rating (OR). periodontal treatment were performed with a portable sulfide monitor (OralChromaTM, Japan). The levels of three major components of VSCs [H2S, CH3SH, and (CH32S] were measured before and after periodontal treatment.

Results

The periodontal treatment significantly reduced the level of VSCs(P < 0.01). The levels of H2S and CH3SH were downregulated by over 80% and 50%respectively. The ratio of CH3SH/H2S before and after periodontal treatment was not statistically significant (P >0.05).

Conclusions

It is indicated that periodontitis is the major source of halitosis and VSCs. Periodontal treatment can significantly reduce oral halitosis and VSCs.
