Abstract:
Objective
To observe and evaluate the effects of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) and nano-HAP-Collagen (nHAC) on periodontal bone defects repair.
Methods
The rhBMP-2 combined with nHAC were transplanted into man-made periodontal bone defects, and the groups covered with only nHAC or with nothing were the controls. The animals were sacrificed after 8 weeks and the periodontal bone regeneration was observed histologically. Bone histomorphometry was measured.
Results
The rhBMP-2-nHAC group exhibited a large amount of new periodontal tissue. In the bone histomorphometry study, significant differences were found for the STS, DTS, MAR, TBV, TOS and TBOS values among the three groups (P <0.05). The values of rhBMP-2-nHAC and nHAC group were significantly higher than that of the control group (P <0.05). The difference of those value were statistically significant between rhBMP-2-nHAC and nHAC group, too (P < 0.05).
Conclusions
The rhBMP-2-nHAC compound material presents better osteoconductive and osteoinductive activity. It can be used to promote periodontal regeneration.
