Abstract:
Objective
To study the effect of cone beam CT (CBCT) in assessment of alveolar bone defection.
Methods
Ten patients with periodontosis were selected for study. Each patient was taken full mouth intraoral periapical digital images and CBCT. Images were viewed on digital medical monitor. The periodontal bone of 256 teeth was evaluated with periapical digital image system and CBCT system respectively.
Results
Both intraoral periapical digital image system and CBCT system could clearly show the alveolar bone defects in medial-distal orientation. There is no significant difference between two systems according statistic analysis. However, the alveolar bone defects in lingual-buccal orientation could not be shown accurately on intraoral periapical digital image, it was able to be distinguished clearly on CBCT.
Conclusion
CBCT has more advantages than intraoral periapical digital images in evaluating alveolar bone defection.
