Experimental study of the treatment for bone defect using bone marrow stromal cells

Abstract:

Objective

To study the effect of bone marrow stromal cells (BMSC) on the repair of bone defect.

Methods

Ten New Zealand rabbit were used as the experimental animal.Bone marrow was obtained by percutaneous aspiration and cultured in vitro for 2 weeks.Bone defect of 1.5 cm long was surgically formed in both sides of the radii.BMSCs were injected into the defect of the experimental side, while culture medium was injected in the control side.X-ray examination was taken by the end of the 1, 2, 3, and 4 week after injection.At the end of the 4 week, the callus formed in bone defect was separated by surgical operation and histologically examined.

Results

The bone callus formation of the experimental sides was faster than that of the control sides.At the end of the 4 week, all of the bone defects in experimental side were repaired completely with bone trabecula.However, bone trabecula was not formed in the defect of the control side.

Conclusion

Bone marrow stromal cells can promote the bone defects healing.
