Abstract:
Objective This study aimed to analyze the periodontitis-related videos on TikTok platform, and to evaluate their quality and influencing factors so as to provide a certain basis for new media companies and the relevant policy-making, and to further improve people′s ability to recognize the quality of videos.
Methods Periodontitis was used as the keyword to search all videos before January 20, 2021 on the TikTok platform. Searching results were sorted by the number of "likes" from high to low. Then the top 70 videos were selected and analyzed with the "DISCERN" Scale, the Global Quality Scale (GQS) , and the Quality Assessment Scale (QAS) evaluation system.
Results The total duration of all included 70 videos was 4 446 seconds. Videos provided by healthcare workers accounted for the largest percentage (50%) . These videos received a total of 559 941 (554-107 000) likes, 32 389 (12-6 498) comments and 45 268 (9-5 319) retweets. The video quality evaluation values were 43 ± 5 for "DISCERN" , 3.00 for GQS, and 3.25 for QAS, and there was no significant difference in the quality between groups (P>0.05) . Only shopping links and DISCERN correlation coefficients were found to be negatively correlated.
Conclusions Most periodontitis-related videos on TikTok platform in China were of medium quality, which had insufficient descriptions of periodontitis. Most videos were presented in the form of animations. The relatively high-quality videos were provided by medical workers and professional public channels. The quality of the videos may be affected by the attachment of shopping links.
