Abstract:
Objective
To explore the application of computer aided design/computer aided manufacture in the magnet-retained obturator restorations of unilateral maxillary defect.
Methods
Two patients with unilateral maxillary defect were involved in the study.Three months after maxillectomy, CT scan measured the maxillary defects, and the images were processed and designed by the Simplant-CMF software. The resin models of the defects were manufactured by rapid prototyping machine and the silicone rubber obturators were fabricated by perfusion and coating methods.Sectional obturators were tried in and then impressions were obtained to fabricate the removable partial dentures.Magnetic attachments were set up to connect the denture with the silicone rubber obturator. After the prostheses were finished and tried in, their stability and retention were studied.Sealing abilities between the oral and nasal cavities were measured by rinsing, while the masticatory functions were tested by spectrophotometry method.
Results
The marginal fitness, retention and sealing abilities of these prostheses were good.Their masticatory efficiencies improved a lot.
Conclusion
Magnetic attachments can enhance the retention, stability and masticatory function of prostheses in unilateral maxillary defect.
