Abstract:

Objective

To investigate the expression and clinicopathologic significance of transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in adenoid cystic carcinoma(ACC).

Methods

The expression and correlation of TGF-β1 and VEGF in 31 cases of ACC, 28 cases of pleomorphic adenoma, 30 cases of normal salivary gland tissue was detected by SP immunochemistry, counted by CD34 microvessel density (MVD).SPSS 13.0 statistics software was applied in the analysis.

Results

There was a statistically significant difference in the expression of TGF-β1 and VEGF in normal salivary gland tissue, PA and ACC stepply (P <0.05), and so did the MVD counted (P <0.05), MVD counted tended to depend on TGF-β1 and VEGF expression in ACC (P <0.05), the expression of TGF-β1 was correlated with that of VEGF in ACC (P <0.05), TGF-β1 and VEGF expression is significantly associated with distance metastasis (P <0.05), but did not correlate with tumor size、pathological grade, lymph node metastasis.

Conclusions

The expression of TGF-β1, VEGF possibly correlated with microvessel density in ACC, TGF-β1 may be corresponding with hematogenous metastasis in ACC through tumor vessel formation, TGF-β1 and VEGF may play an important role on the distance invasion and determination of the malignant degree in ACC.
