Abstract:

Objective

To translate the original English version of the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD) into a Chinese version, and evaluate the validity of the new version among TMD patients.

Methods

In order to develop a Chinese version of RDC/TMD,the original English version of RDC/TMD was translated, back-translated and acculturated. TMD patients aged above 18 were randomly selected and surveyed using the Chinese version of RDC/TMD.Psychometric properties of the Chinese version of RDC/TMD were tested.

Results

A total of 118 TMD patients were surveyed and examined clinically. Internal consistency test showed that the Cronbach's α coefficient of the Chinese version of RDC/TMD was 0.93 while the split-half coefficient was 0.71, and the Cronbach's α coefficient of each sub-scale of RDC/TMD was Chronic pain 0.88, Depression 0.93,Limitation related to mandibular functioning 0.68, Nonspecific physical symptoms (pain items included)0.86, Nonspecific physical symptoms (pain items excluded) 0.81. Validity analysis of the RDC/TMD showed that there was a significant logic correlation in the scale.

Conclusions

The Chinese version of RDC/TMD has been established successfully with good psychometric properties which provide the theoretical evidence for further application in Chinese TMD patients.
