Development and evaluation on reliability and validity of a Chinese version of the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders

Objective

To translate the original English version of the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders （RDC/TMD） into a Chinese version， and evaluate the validity of the new version among TMD patients.

Methods

In order to develop a Chinese version of RDC/TMD，the original English version of RDC/TMD was translated， back-translated and acculturated. TMD patients aged above 18 were randomly selected and surveyed using the Chinese version of RDC/TMD.Psychometric properties of the Chinese version of RDC/TMD were tested.

Results

A total of 118 TMD patients were surveyed and examined clinically. Internal consistency test showed that the Cronbach's α coefficient of the Chinese version of RDC/TMD was 0.93 while the split-half coefficient was 0.71， and the Cronbach's α coefficient of each sub-scale of RDC/TMD was Chronic pain 0.88， Depression 0.93，Limitation related to mandibular functioning 0.68， Nonspecific physical symptoms （pain items included）0.86， Nonspecific physical symptoms （pain items excluded） 0.81. Validity analysis of the RDC/TMD showed that there was a significant logic correlation in the scale.

Conclusions

The Chinese version of RDC/TMD has been established successfully with good psychometric properties which provide the theoretical evidence for further application in Chinese TMD patients.
