Application of 3dMD® photographing technique in orthodontic teaching program

Abstract:

Objective

To study the effect of 3dMD? three-dimensional photogrammetry on orthodontics experimental teaching program.

Methods

A total of 24 students from Stomatology Grade 2013, Guanghua School of Stomatology, Sun Yat-sen University were randomly divided into two groups. Both groups learnt the two methods of photograph analysis, one group was first taught with traditional teaching method, another with 3dMD? method and then exchanged. The students were asked to grade both of the traditional and 3dMD? teaching methods, and questionnaire survey was performed.

Results

The scores of the traditional method and 3dMD? method were (8.5 ± 0.75) and (7.1 ± 1.13) respectively, and the difference was statistically significant (t = 2.762, P = 0.028) . In the students′ point of view, the advantages of 3dMD? teaching method were mainly "novel and interesting" and "beneficial for the understanding of orthodontic cases" .

Conclusion

Three-dimensional photogrammetry is helpful to improve the effect of orthodontic teaching.
