Abstract:

Objective

To study the effect of different sintering temperature on the physiochemical properties of porcine hydroxyapatite (HA) .

Methods

The pretreated porcine bone blocks were sintered at 600, 800 and 1000 ℃ to prepare biological hydroxyapatite. The morphology, chemical composition, crystal characteristics and functional groups of the heated samples were determined through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) , energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) , X-ray diffraction (XRD) , fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) .

Results

Pure phase biological hydroxyapatite could be prepared from pretreated porcine bone through thermal treatment. The calcium/phosphorus ratios of the bone samples prepared by sintering at 600, 800 and 1000 ℃ were 1.49, 1.55 and 1.58, respectively. With the increase of sintering temperature, the grain size of hydroxyapatite became larger and the aggregation tendency was increased. However, the content of carbonate group was decreased.

Conclusions

With the increase of sintering temperature from 600 ℃ to 1000 ℃, the physiochemical properties of porcine hydroxyapatite was changed, while lower temperature sintering preparation of porcine hydroxyapatite with better physiochemical properties.
