Abstract:

Objective

To investigate the expression of CD133 in oral normal mucosa, oral lichen planus (OLP) and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) , to analyze the relationship between its expression and the clinical factors, and to evaluate the significnce of CD133 as an index to evaluate the canceration potency of OLP.

Methods

Immunohistochemical analysis and Mann-Whiney test were applied to investigate the expression of CD133 in paraffin section of human oral normal mucosa, OLP and OSCC tissues. Then the relationships between its expression and clinical factors were analyzed. Immunohistochemical analysis, Western blot analysis and t test were also applied to investigate the expression of CD133 in human dysplastic oral keratinocyte (DOK) cell line and human oral squamous cell carcinoma (CAL-27) cell line.

Results

A gradual increase in the expression of CD133 was observed in three groups, the positive rates of CD133 were 0 (0/10) , 31.67% (19/60) , 63.33% (38/60) respectively. Significant differences were observed in expression of CD133 in oral normal mucosa and OLP (Z=-2.046, P= 0.041) , OLP and OSCC (Z=-3.777, P<0.001) . An increase in the expression of CD133 were also observed from DOK cell line to CAL-27 cell line (t=-5.029, P= 0.001) .

Conclusion

CD133 can be used as clinical index to evaluate the canceration potency of oral lichen planus.
