Abstract:

Objective

To investigate the anticarious effect of artificial saliva with honeysuckle flower and glycyrrhizia.

Method

The efficient substance extracted from honeysuckle flower and glycyrrhizia was put into artificial saliva, and the antibacterial effect of the artificial saliva on Streptococcus mutans ATCC 10449 and Streptococcus sobrinus OMZ65 were investigated. Then 30 SD rats were fed with cariogenic forage 2000# and infected with Streptococcus mutans. The rats were divided into 4 groups, with each group fed with artificial saliva with honeysuckle flower and glycyrrhizia, arilin chlorhexidine solutions, artificial saliva or distilled water respectively. The effect of artificial saliva with honeysuckle flower and glycyrrhizia on dental caries development in SD rats was evaluated with Keyes scoring method.

Result

The MIC of the Streptococcus mutans ATCC 10449 and Streptococcus sobrinus OMZ65 were 25 mg/ml and 12.5 mg/ml, respectively. The MBC of the Streptococcus mutans ATCC 10449 and Streptococcus sobrinus OMZ65 were 200 mg/ml and 100 mg/ml, respectively.According to the Keyes scoring,at E,Ds,Dm and Dx levels, the group of artificial saliva with honeysuckle flower and glycyrrhizia was lower than groups of artificial saliva and distilled water, but higher than the group of arilin chlorhexidine solutions.

Conclusion

Artificial saliva with honeysuckle flower and glycyrrhizia inhibit the growth of Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus, and thus exhibit anticarious effect in SD rats.
