Comparison of the image quality of digital and conventional dental film

Abstract:

Objective

To study the image quality of digital dental X-ray film.

Methods

25 sheets of conventional dental X-ray films and digital dental X-ray films were randomly selected from anterior teeth area, bicuspid area and molar area,respectively. The distinctness of dental root and periodontal structure were evaluated. Student t-test was performed to analyze the data.

Results

All the tooth-root and periodental structures on film-based X-ray image were shown clearly. In digital dental X-ray images the tooth-root and periodental structures of anterior teeth were clear however, the rootcanal and periodontal structure of the middle 1/3 of root of bicuspid area and molar area were blur.Sirona digital dental image could distinctly demonstrate the root and periodontal structures of lower molar area. Sopro digital dental image couldn't clearly show the root-canal and periodontal structure of the middle 1/3 of root of lower molar area.

Conclusion

The quality of digital dental images in anterior region was satisfactory, but the images in postierior region area couldn't fully meet the requirnent of clinical diagnosis and treatment.
