Abstract:

Long duration is one of the most important factors which keep adults from orthodontic treatment. How to accelerate orthodontic tooth movement and shorten the treatment time is a common goal for both patients and clinicians. At present, it is viable to reduce the residence of tooth movement through medications, low-level energy laser therapy, pulsed electromagnetic fields, and osteogenic techniques. Based on the theory of regional acceleration phenomenon, periodontally accelerated osteogenic orthodontics (PAOO) have outstanding advantages over conventional orthodontics, including the reduction of treatment duration, less root absorption, augmentation of alveolar bone, more predictive esthetic effects and more post-orthodontic stability. This article reviews the history, biological mechanisms, clinical application and treatment outcomes of PAOO.
