Acidogenicity and aciduricity of Streptococcus mutans isolated from the saliva of individuals with radiation-induced caries

Abstract:

Objective

To explore the acidogenicity and aciduricity of Streptococcus mutans (S.mutans) isolated from individuals with radiation-induced caries and non-caries.

Methods

Total of 40 strains isolated from individuals with radiation-induced caries (the experimental group) and non-caries (the control group)(n=20 per group), were inoculated into PYG liquid medium with different initial pH (ranging from 4.0 to 7.0 at 0.5 intervals). The terminal pH of medium was detected by pH meter to evaluate the acidogenicity, and the A600 was measured by spectrophotometer to assess the aciduricity.

Results

The acidogenicity and aciduric abilities of S.mutans isolated from the experimental group were significantly higher than those isolated from the control group (P<0. 05).

Conclusion

S.mutans strains isolated from the saliva of individuals with radiation-induced caries showed higher acidogenecity and aciduricability.
