Abstract:

Objective

The purpose of this study is to compare peri-implant tissues outcomes of single-tooth implants using platform switching and platform butt-joint placed into maxillary esthetics area.

Methods

One hundred and ten single-tooth implants were placed into the maxillary aesthetic area of 95 patients selected randomly; 54 implants of 47 patients were using Ankylos system (platform switching); and 56 implants of 48 patients were using Nobel Replace system (butt-joint). All the patients had a follow-up of 36 to 62 months after the implant restoration. Radiographic and clinical examinations were made at the time of the final crowns delivery and the subsequent following-up month. The peri-implant bone resorption and the index of Red Aesthetic Standard were evaluated, respectively.

Results

There were significant differences in bone resorption and red aesthetic index between the two groups after implant restoration. Bone resorption around implants using platform switching was significantly less than that using platform butt-joint, and aesthetic index of the former group was higher than the later one.

Conclusion

Dental implants using platform switching placed into the maxillary esthetic area were able to preserve better marginal bone and acquired better aesthetic effect.
