Abstract:

Objectives

To investigate the effect of different magnitudes of mechanical strain on bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2) protein expression in osteoblasts.

Methods

Rats osteoblasts were exposed to different mechanical strains. The elongation in Group A (control group)was 0%, while Group B was 6%, Group C was 12%, and Group D was 18%, respectively. Ezymelinked immunosorbnent assay (ELISA) was used to detect the expression of BMP-2 protein. Data were analyzed by SPSS 13.0 system using LSD analysis.

Results

There were significant differences among three experimental groups and the control group (P<0.01), and Group C expressed the highest level of BMP-2 protein.

Conclusions

Mechanical strain can promote the expression of BMP-2 protein, which might affect bone remodeling in orthodontic treatment.
