Abstract:

Objective

To investigate the clinical application of the supraclavicular artery island flap (SCAIF) in the reconstruction of the defects following cancer ablation in maxillofacial region.

Methods

A retrospective study on the clinical data of 15 patients who underwent reconstruction of the maxillofacial region defect with SCAIF in the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery, the Second Affiliated Hospital of Medical College of Shantou University, from September 2015 to December 2016, including 8 cases of tongue carcinoma, 2 cases of oropharyngeal cancer, 4 cases of squamous cell carcinoma and 1 cases of carcinoma of the floor of mouth. UICC clinical stage: T2N0M0 2 cases, T3N0M0 7 cases, T3N1M0 cases, T4N1M0 1 cases, T4N2M0 1 cases. The sizes of the skin paddle ranged from 4 cm × 5 cm to 7.5 cm × 10 cm.

Results

The SCAIF survived in fourteen cases (93.3%, 14/15) , including two cases with minimal partial necrosis. 1 case of SCAIF was necrosis.

Conclusion

The supraclavicular artery island flap is an ideal choice for the reconstruction of the defect after cancer ablation.
