Multi-slice CT findings of osteomyelitis in the jaw bone of children

Abstract:

Objective

To evaluate the value of multi-slice CT (MSCT) in the diagnosis of osteomyelitis in the jaw bone of children.

Methods

Totally 10 cases of osteomyelitis in the jaw bone of children were collected and all these cases were undergone MSCT scanning examination pre-operation. After image processing, MSCT findings were analyzed.

Results

Four male and six female patients were included. All lesions were occurred in the mandibular angle and mandibular branch. The MSCT findings in 10 cases included: 9 cases had bone destruction; a wide range of bone hyperplasia and sclerosis and periosteum of new bone parallel to the jaws could be seen in all cases. Lesions of jaw could be reshaped in 2 cases of follow-up; 8 cases have a complication of surrounding cellulitis.

Conclusion

Osteomyelitis of pediatric jaw bone can be diagnosed correctly pre-operation by MSCT. MSCT is a faithful examination in evaluation and selection of appropriate clinical treatment.
