Dental-derived mesenchymal stem cells and their potential value in periodontal regeneration

Abstract:

Periodontitis is a chronic infective disease, which characterized as inflammation and destruction of the supporting tissues of the teeth. Traditional treatment strategies focus on the removal of dental plaque and the long-term control of dental plaque accumulation. However, the ultimate object of periodontal therapy is to restore the structure and function of the periodontium, which means regeneration of the supporting tissues, including alveolar bone, periodontal ligament and cementum, over a previously diseased root surface. The development of tissue engineering provides a new thought to periodontal regeneration therapy. Mesemchymal stem cells, with highly proliferation and differentiation potential, are ideal adult stem cells developed from mesoderm. With the identification of mesenchymal stem cells in oral cavity, tissue engineering using mesenchymal stem cells has become a most interesting therapeutic option. The aim of this article was to describe the main sources of dental-derived mesenchymal stem cells and their potential in regenerative therapy.
