Abstract:

Relapse after orthognathic surgery always results from condylar or/and articular disk displacement and progressive condylar absorption. Orthognathic surgery which is a traumatic method to correct the dentofacial deformity, changes the structure of temporomandibular joint simultaneously. While the patients suffered from dentofacial deformity also have a high prevalence of signs and symptoms of TMD. Further researches are needed to confirm whether orthognathic surgery could lead to reoccurrence or occurrence of TMD or not. Some studies shown that orthognathic surgery was a stable procedure for patients undergoing simultaneous TMJ disc repositioning. There is no specific strategy could be applied to prevent the deformity relapse and TMD after orthognathic surgery. Literatures, published in this 5 years, on the relationships among TMD, dentofacial deformities and orthognathic surgery, were reviewed.
