Abstract:

Objective

To determine the cariogenicity of S.mutans in dental plaque of severe early childhood caries (S-ECC) and caries free children, and shed light on the early diagnosis and prevention of S-ECC.

Methods

According to the NIH criteria, 67 children with age ranging from 3 to 5 year-old were recruited and classified into S-ECC (n=35) and caries-free groups (CF, n=32). Plaque samples were collected and cultured. Strains of S.mutans were identified, purified and cultured in TYCSB medium with 20% sucrose. Supernatant's pH value, was measured to evaluate acidgencity of S.muatans, and A600 to evaluate the propagating status. The quantities of water insoluble glucans (WIG) were measured by anthrone method. Turbidimetry was used to measure the adhesive ability.

Results

The detection ratios of S.mutans in S-ECC and CF group were 92.4% and 62.3%(P <0.05). △pH, A600, WIG and adhesion ratio of S mutans isolated from S-ECC group was statistically higher than that from CF group (P <0.05).

Conclusion

The detection ratio in dental plaque and cariogenicity of of S.mutans from S-ECC group was significantly higher than that from caries free group.
