Abstract:
Objective
To study the change of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and matrix metalloproteinase-3 (MMP-3) level in temporamandibular joint (TMJ) synovial fluid after sodium hyaluronate (SH) irrigation in temporamandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJOA) patients.
Methods
Thirty patients suffered from TMJOA were randomly devided into two groups, treated respectively with lavage and SH injection for the trail group and only lavage for the control group. The MMP-2 and MMP-3 level was examined before and after the treaments.
Results
The clinical effect of the trail group was better than that of the control group (the opening degree:P <0.01,VAS:P <0.05); A small amount of MMP-2 (31.12 μg/L) and MMP-3 (13.32 μg/L) were detected in one case of asymptomatic volunteers; The change of MMP-2, 3 level in the trail group was higher than that in control group.
Conclusion
SH may slow the destruction of articular cartilage matrix by reducing the MMP-2, 3 level in TMJ SF in TMJOA patients, thus plays a role in the treatment of TMJOA.
