Abstract:

Objective

To evaluate the clinical outcome of dental operating microscope and ultrasonic instruments in treating blocked canals.

Methods

The etiology of canal blockage included calcification, broken instruments, resinifying materials, and ledge etc.One hundred and thirty blocked canals were negotiated by using ultrasonic tips under dental operating microscope. The success rates were calculated.

Results

One hundred and fourteen blocked canals were successfully managed with a success rate of 87.7%.The success rates of each category of the blocked canals were 86.4% for calcified canals, 81.8% for canals blocked by resinifying therapy,81.0% for ledged canal, and 95.3% for broken instruments in the apical two thirds of root canal, respectively.

Conclusions

The use of DOM and ultrasonic instruments is proved to be an effective way in the management of blocked canals.
