Abstract:

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is one of the most common malignant tumors in the head and neck regions. The diagnosis and treatment for OSCC are still unsatisfactory. It has been shown that microRNAs are abnormally expressed in many malignant tumors, including OSCC. Abundant evidence suggests that microRNA-21 (miR-21) plays an important role in the development of OSCC, and its abnormal expression can act as an important basis for early diagnosis and prognosis assessment of patients. This paper reviews the research progress of miR-21 functions in OSCC, which demonstrates that miR-21 may be used as a diagnostic and prognostic biomarker for OSCC patients and worth further efforts for clinical translations.
