Abstract:

As characteristic cells in pulp-dentin complex, the main functions of odontoblasts are the synthesis, extracellular deposition, and mineralization of collagen-rich matrix to form the dentin tissue. Recent studies have indicated that the odontoblasts may have functioned not only as dentinogenesis, but also as first cells encountered by pathogens. When encountered to pathogens invalided by caries, odontoblasts identify pathogen-associated molecular patterns via pattern recognition receptors and start immune defense response. This article reviews the histophysiological characteristics of odontoblasts and their functions in the immune response of pulpitis.
