Abstract:

Objective

To evaluate the effect of application of the modified denture with drainage holes for treatment of marsupialized cysts in mixed-dentition-youth.

Methods

Thirty-eight patients with cysts of jaw were divided randomly into two groups (denture drainage group and control) , 19 in each group. Patients in control group wore the normal cyst plugs without drainage holes. Patients in denture drainage group wore the modified dentures with drainage holes for treatment of marsupialized cysts. Twelve months later, treatment effect and patients′ satisfaction with the cyst plugs were studied. Collected data were analyzed via χ2 analysis with a SPSS 17.0 software and P<0.05 was regarded as statistically significant.

Results

The treatment effect of the cyst in the denture drainage group was significantly better than control (χ2= 9.471, P= 0.005) . The secondary infection rates in the two groups were similar (χ2= 1.027, P= 0.311) . Patients′ satisfaction of the retention of the cyst plugs in the two groups were similar (χ2= 0.362, P= 0.547) . Patients in the denture drainage group were much more satisfied with the mastication function improvement (χ2= 8.686, P= 0.003) and esthetic results of the plugs than control (χ2= 7.082, P= 0.022) .

Conclusion

The modified denture with drainage holes for treatment of marsupialized cysts is effective.
