Abstract:

Objective

To evaluate the security and efficacy of direct percutaneous puncture embolization under digital subtraction angiography (DSA) for arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) in oral and maxillofacial region using absolute ethanol.

Methods

Nine patients with arteriovenous malformations, collected from Xuzhou central hospital, who underwent staged percutaneous ethanol embolotherapy between Mar. 2012 and Jan. 2016 were reviewed. Therapeutic outcomes were evaluated by both clinical responses and image finding.

Results

Lesions completely regressed in five cases. Recession rates were greater than 50% in two cases, and 25% ~ 50% in the other two cases. Severe complications, such as cerebral embolism, pulmonary embolism and cardiac failure, had not arisen.

Conclusion

Percutaneous ethanol embolotherapy under DSA seemed to be a safe and effective treatment for AVMs in oral and maxillofacial region.
