Abstract:
Objective
To evaluate the clinic effect of functional parotidectomy by retromandibular approach in benign parotid tumors.
Methods
The clinic effect and complication were compared between forty-five patients of benign parotid tumors underwent functional parotidectomy by retromandibular approach and forty-five patients selected randomly from the medical record who underwent superficial parotidectomy. The clinical clinical effects complication was recorded.
Results
The recurrence rate was not significantly different between the two groups, but the complications (facial paralysis, Frey's syndrome and salivary fistula) in functional parotidectomy group were lower than that of superficial parotidectomy group (P <0.05).
Conclusion
Functional parotidectomy in benign parotid tumors by retromandibular approach could reserve more parotid gland tissue, cause less complication and can be a good choice for the treatment of benign parotid tumors.
