Abstract:

Objective

To compare the oropharyngeal airway dimension in adolescence with Class Ⅰand Class Ⅱsagittal skeletal patterns and to investigate correlations between the airway dimension and the maxillofacial variables in these adolescence.

Methods

Forty adolescence aged from 11 to 16 years were divided into two groups based on their ANB angles, and the two groups were matched for age and sex. Each subject presented a normodivergent skeletal pattern.Three-dimensional airway volumes and cross-sectional areas were measured by using cone-beam computed tomography volume scans, and two-dimensional lateral cephalograms were created and analyzed.Airway lengths, volumes and cross-sectional measurements were compared between the two groups.Correlation analyses about oropharyngeal airway dimension with the maxillofacial variables were carried out.

Results

No statistically significances between the two groups were found in the cross-sectional and volumetric measurements of the airway (P >0.05).The oropharyngeal airway dimension had positive correlation with ANS-PNS, Go-Me, Ar-Gn (P <0.05), and had no correlation with ANB, NA-PA, FH-NP (P >0.05).

Conclusions

Differences in the oropharyngeal airway dimension were not statistically significant between the two groups. The dimension of the oropharyngeal airway was affected by the lengths of maxilla and mandible, and tend to increase with maxilla and mandible lengths.
