Abstract:
Objective
To compare the effects of various restoration methods for endodontically treated premolars.
Methods
Ten pairs of symmetrical maxillary first premolar were collected from 10 patients. Each pair received different treatments: teeth in the control group remained intact; while in the teeth of the test groups, mesial-occlusal cavities were prepared under the same standard and then restored with various methods. All the teeth were loaded by a universal test machine (Instron 4320)with a speed of 1 mm/min and an angle of 45° to the long axis of the teeth. The loading point was in the middle of the lingual surface on the buccal cusp. The load at the fracture was recorded. Paired t-test was used to analyze the data.
Results
The fracture loads of the full-crown-restored teeth were lower than that of the natural teeth, while the fracture loads of the post-crown-restored teeth were higher than that of the natural teeth.
Conclusion
From the point of biomechanics, post crown is the optimal restorative method for mesial-occlusal cavity.
