Abstract:

Objective

To evaluate the etiology relationship between chronic periodontitis and stroke.

Methods

Electronic search was conducted to find out the association between chronic periodontitis and stroke in CBM (1978—2016) , VIP chinese database, CNKI, Medline (OVID, 1950—2016) , EMBASE (1984—2016) and CENTRAL (2016, Issue 9) . Hand search was applied to the Chinese journals in oral research. Two investigators performed reference screening, quality evaluation and data collection (including incidence of periodontitis, CAL, PI and levels of CRP) . Revman 5.3.3 was applied for Meta-analysis of the data.

Results

Twelve referen met the inclusion criteria (2 Chinese researches and 10 English researches) , including 2835 participants, 1396 of them with stroke. The result of Meta-analysis showed that the patients with stroke were more likely with chronic periodontitis[OR= 2.89, 95% CI= (2.00, 4.17) , P<0.001], more severe periodontitis[OR= 1.25, 95% CI= (0.50, 2.00) , P= 0.001] and poorer oral hygiene[OR= 0.32, 95% CI= (0.11, 0.54) , P= 0.004]. The levels of CRP increased obviously [OR= 5.38, 95% CI= (4.78, 5.97) , P<0.001].

Conclusion

Chronic periodontitis and stroke have a possible correlation.
