Abstract:

Objective

To investigate the distribution of bacteria types and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns in osteoradionecrosis of the jaw patients.

Methods

Retrospective analysis of 106 samples of secreta collected from osteoradionecrosis (ORN) patients whom were admitted in the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery, hospital of stomatology, Sun Yat-sen University. These samples were detected by bacterial cultivation and antimicrobial susceptibility test.

Results

There was no existence of bacteria in 31 of 106 samples (29.2%) and bacteria could be cultured in the other 75 samples (70.8%) . Totally 14 of the samples (13.2%) were double or multiple infections, and 61 of the samples (57.5%) were single infection. 36 different kinds of pathogenic bacteria with 95 strains were isolated, including 25 kinds of aerobe (78 strains of 95, 69.4%) and 11 anaerobic bacteria (17 strains of 95, 30.6%) . Bacteria were more sensitive for linezolid, vancomycin, imipenem, meropenem, amikacin, piperacilin and tazobactam in antimicrobial susceptibility. And it also had a higher proportion of antibiotic resistance for erythrocin, clindamycin, ampicillin, cafazolin, azithromycin, clarithromycin.

Conclusions

The diversity and wide range of bacteria were found in patients with ORN, but some patients with aseptic necrosis were also appeared. The results of bacterial cultivation and antimicrobial susceptibility test could guide the drug use to avoid blindly use of antimicrobial drugs.
