Abstract:

Objective

To evaluate the correlation between Enterococcus faecalis and refractory periapical periodontitis.

Methods

Databases including PubMed, ScienceDirect, EMbase, WanFang Data, CNKI and VIP were searched from inception to December, 2013, so as to identify the independent cohort studies, case-control studies and cross-sectional studies. Moreover, the references of relevant studies were retrieved. According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, the studies were screened, the data was extracted, and the methodological quality of the included studies was assessed. Then Metaanalysis was performed by Stata 12.0 software.

Results

A total of 18 studies were included, including 728 rafractory periapical periodontitis cases and 748 controlled cases. The results of Meta-analysis showed that the refractory periapical periodontitis group was more likely to have Enterococcus faecalis infection than the control group [OR=3.559, 95% CI(1.696,7.470),P <0.05]. The same results were found in both sub-group and sensitivity analysis.

Conclusions

Enterococcus faecalis is closely related to refractory periapical periodontitis. However, detailed pathogenesis mechanism is still unknown. Due to the limited quality and quantity of the included studies, more high-quality studies are required to prove the analysis results above.

Key words: Enterococcus faecalis, Refractory periapical periodontitis, Correlation, Metaanalysis
