Abstract:
Objective
To evaluate the quantity change of the root-bound endotoxin in perio-dontally-involved teeth by using different treatment modalities.
Methods
Ninety periodontally-involved single-root teeth with severe bone absorption were extracted and divided into 3 groups randomly. The first group served as the control group with no treatment. The second group was treated by scaling and root planning with Gracey scalers. Scaling and root planning for the third group was performed by using the VectorTM-system. Substance on the root surface was grounded after the treatment, and solved in water. The concentration of endotoxin was quantitatively measured by horseshoe crab.
Results
The concentrations of endotoxin were 0.825 EU/ml, 0.240 EU/ml and 0.184 EU/ml respectively for the control group, the Gracey group and the Vector group.
Conclusions
Scaling and root planning can effectively reduce the root-bound endotoxin in periodontally-involved teeth.
