Abstract:
Objective
To analysis the influence of orthodontic knowledge on adult orthodontic patients′ evaluation of smile esthetics of gingival exposure.
Methods
The authors built the smile models with different amounts of gingival exposure and surveyed 99 adult orthodontic patients by using electronic questionnaires.
Results
The ideal value of smile esthetics in terms of gingival exposure was-1.0 mm. The acceptable value was 2.0 mm. After orthodontists′ interventions， the same patients′acceptable value increased to 2.5 mm.
Conclusions
The ideal and acceptable values of gingival exposure during smile could be used as reference in esthetic evaluation. Professional Orthodontic knowledge increases orthodontic patients′ tolerance of gingival exposure.
