Abstract:

Objective

To investigate the effects of cleft palate and palatoplasty on the development of dental-arch morphology.

Methods

CT scanning and imaging system for dental cast measurement was applied to analyze the differences in dental-arch morphology among 30 adults with normal occlusion, 30 adult patients with unilateral complete cleft lip and palate(UCLP) after palatoplasty and 30 patients without surgery.

Results

All the maxillary arch widths and anterior arch lengths in the surgical group were significantly smaller than those of the non-surgical group(P <0.01). Compared with the control group, the widths of maxillary anterior arch, maxillary and mandibular posterior arch were all significantly smaller, while both maxillary and mandibular posterior arch widths were significantly larger in the non-surgical group(P <0.01).

Conclusions

The influence of cleft palate on the maxillary arch development is limited to the region close to the cleft in the anterior arch. Palatoplasty was the main factor contributing to the constriction of maxillary arch, and meanwhile, the sagittal development of anterior arch was inhibited.
