A clinical study of surgical treatment with temporomandibular joint disc perforation

Abstract:

Objectives

To evaluate the clinical outcome of surgical treatment with temporomandibular joint disc perforation.

Methods

Follow-up was done on 191 patients who had received surgical treatment on temporomandibular joint disc perforation from Hospital of Stomatology, Wuhan University. 67 patients had complete documents on signs of joint pain, joints sounds and maximal mouth opening before surgery and in 3, 6, 12, 24 months after surgery and above respectively.

Results

Pre-operative signs were improved significantly after 6 months of the operation. The relieving rate of post-operative joint pain was 73.7%, 80.0%, 86.2%, 83.3%, 77.8% in 3, 6, 12, 24 months after surgery and above respectively, while the improving rates of joints sounds were 80.0%, 100.0%, 58.8%, 57.1% and 77.8%. For the maximal mouth opening, it was 31, 35, 35, 35 and 38 mm respectively.

Conclusion

Operation is effective for temporomandibular joint disc perforation.
