Abstract:

Objective

To study the influence of porcelain thickness on the color and translucency.

Methods

Ten plate-shaped specimens of enamel and dental porcelain were made, five for each. The initial thickness was 1.2 mm and then the specimens were gradually grinded to 1.0, 0.8, 0.6, 0.4, 0.2 mm. The transmittance and color parameters were measured by a spectrocolorimeter at each thickness. Color difference and transmittance difference were calculated.

Results

L* increased while a* and b* decreased with the decrease of the thickness. Transmittance increased obviously with the decrease of the thickness. Exponent relationship was found between the transmittance and the thickness.

Conclusion

Thickness of veneer porcelain has a significant effect on the color and translucency.
