Objective
To evaluate the influence of temporary filling materials, filling methods on coronal microleakage of endodontically treated teeth; to discuss the influence of time on the sealing ability of coronal temporary fillings.
Methods
Extracted teeth were randomly divided after treated with root canal therapy. The samples were stained with 2% methylene blue then made clearing specimens. The specimens were evaluated under stereomicroscope and blindly scored for microleakage. The data collected were then analyzed statistically.
Results
Comparison of various sealing materials: the microleakage scores of ZOE were higher than that of Cavit-G and Caviton in 1 week and 4 weeks; whenever in 2 weeks, the microleakage of Caviton was the lowest of the three.Comparison of filling methods: there was no statistically significant difference between the two filling methods of ZOE group (P >0.05).Directly or indirectly sealing for 1 week, the microleakage scores of Cavit-G and Caviton had no statistically significant difference(P>0.05), while there were statistically significant differences when sealing for 2 or 4 weeks (P <0.05).Influence of sealing time: with the proloning of sealing time, the microleakage scores of the three types of materials increased significantly (P <0.05).
Conclusions
Amongst the three materials, Caviton was better than the other two.Usage of cotton pellets increased the coronal microleakage of Cavit-G and Caviton. The optimum time of temporary fillings was 2 weeks for Caviton and Cavit-G, and 1 week for ZOE.
