Investigation on the urine excretion of nickel and chromium related to nickel-chromium alloy dental restoration[J/OL].
Objective
To explore the effect of wearing dental nickel-chromium alloy porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns on the levels of urinary nickel and chromium.
Methods
Forty-five patients wearing dental PFM crowns, including 37 nickel-chrome alloy PFM crowns as the exposed group and 8 Titanium (Ti) alloy PFM crowns as the control group. Each of the participants was required to provide a urine sample for the measurement of urinary nickel and chromium and to fill a questionnaire.
Results
The independent-samples Student t tests showed that there was no significant differences between the levels of urinary nickel in the studied group(mean: 1.47 μg/g crea) and the control group (mean: 1.55 μg/g crea).Although the level of urinary chromium in the study group (mean: 2.06 μg/g crea) was higher than the control group(mean: 1.17 μg/g crea), there was no statistic significance. After adjusting the potential confounders, multivariable linear regression analyses also showed that the wearing of PFM crowns(type, time and number) had no effects on the level of urinary nickel and chromium (P >0.1).
Conclusions
The conclusion that dental nickel-chrome alloy restoration can increase the excretion levels of urinary nickel and chromium cannot be drawn from the results of this study yet. This conclusion needs to be proved by larger samples in future studies.
